Heal through homeopathy

What is a homeopathic remedy?

consultation

A homeopathic remedy is a natural substance that has been diluted many times. In large quantities, these substances would cause the same symptoms the patient is trying to cure. In small, pure, diluted doses, they are not only safe and free from side effects, but will help assist the body to heal itself. Allium cepa, for example, is a remedy that is used for watery eyes and runny nose and is created from red onion.

How are they made?

Remedies are commonly made by crushing a plant, animal, or mineral substance then putting it into a solvent such as grain alcohol. The extract is then further diluted in a mixture of alcohol and water. The process is repeated many times to achieve a therapeutic dilution. The remedy can then be administered in one of many forms, including tablets, ointments, liquid, or sprays.

How do I choose them?

Over the counter remedies tend to come in 6c and 30c potencies. A solution labelled as '6c' has been diluted six times at a ratio of one part substance to 99 parts alcohol and water, whereas a solution labelled as '30c' has been diluted 30 times at a ratio of one part substance to 99 parts alcohol and water. 6c potency is typically used for long standing conditions, such as rheumatic pain. 30c potency is typically used for first aid or acute situations, such as the onset of a cold or bruising after a knock or fall.

How do I use them?

Remedies should be taken half an hour before or after eating or drinking (e.g. tea or coffee). They should not be handled directly but popped on or under the tongue and allowed to dissolve - the ClikPak range of homeopathic remedies, available at all good independent health food and pharmacy stores including Nelsons Pharmacy, is designed to make this as easy as possible.

As with many conventional tablets and pillules, homeopathic remedies contain small amounts of lactose, so people with lactose intolerance should ask for an alternative.

How do I store them?

Medicines should be kept in their original container away from direct light and strong-smelling substances such as perfume, aromatherapy oils or toothpaste. Spilled tablets or pills should be disposed of safely.

Homeopathy Awareness Week 14 to 21 June 2011

The UK’s Homeopathy Awareness Week takes place from 14th - 21st June 2011. It was originally founded by The Society of Homeopaths in 2000 and this year, the theme will focus on sleeplessness, which affects an estimated 77% of people in GB.

Members of the Society from around the country use this week to raise awareness of homeopathy in their local area, so look out for activities near you. There is also a national media campaign answering your homeopathy queries and we will be joined by Debra Stephenson from Bad Girls, Coronation St and The Impressions Show telling us about her experiences with homeopathy.
